DIRECTOR’s NOTEBOOK

Since the preparation of the film, actually since the script itself, we had very clear that a story like this needed a few players who have very strong and complex characters to enhance their antagonism and create more tension between them.
The two main characters of Txarriboda, Fran and Clara, are characters able to do anything to get what they need. But the needs of both are very different. Fran is able to do anything to get money, and Clara may even risk her live in order to get justice. When their interests clash, they began to play the cat and mouse game; maybe the most interesting part of the tape is that the roles of both changes as the story goes, and the one who seems to be running a higher risk, soon becomes stronger and harasses the contrary, and vice versa.
Looping around them one can see is a collection of well-defined characters and many-sided: Igartua, the officer in charge of the investigation, which seeks to maintain his authority even at the cost of assigning a crime to an innocent; Ramon, the old policeman, who wasted his life searching for truthfulness and now will do his last-ditch effort; or Iker, the young policeman who goes from being the coffee boy to become a reluctant hero despite himself…And all this in the midst of a very contemporary history, business man swamped by the crisis and willing to become entrepreneur raiders just to take their business forward and maintain their social and economic status.
Txarriboda is a dense and tough thriller, with continuous and rising tension that keeps you in suspense with twists. But it’s also very nice visually, because it plays with very beautiful landscapes of Biscay. This way, we alternate sequences of the sea, such as San Juan de Gaztelugatze- where for the first time it’s been made a film of fiction-, or scenes shot in Bakio … with other recorded in the core of the Basque mountains, with the backdrop of Gordexola or La Arboleda …The urban ingredient was recorded in Bilbao, which visually is a very powerful city, and we did it avoiding the typical descriptions of the city playing with very film noir locations.

SCREENWRITER’s NOTEBOOKS

Txarriboda is a thriller-and thus a genre film, that starts with an unconventional premise: the story begins to be told from the point of view of the murderer that triggers the action until the police, in charge of the case, comes in action. Since that moment, the role of one and the other alternates and balances, causing the viewer a suspense and also the question of whether the criminal will be found or if he’ll get away, covered by the plot of serial killer he has created.

It’s not the first time that we address the issue of money. We have done it in previous films. We think it’s an important issue, because there are people able to do anything to achieve it or maintain it. This is the case of Fran, who planned his crimes in fear of losing his status, and with it, everything he has struggled throughout his whole life. But not at all is the case with Clara, for which money is something very minor, because her only obsession is to get justice for the victims.

To add fresh air to specific moments of the plot, without lowering the confrontation between the two antagonist’s characters, we have created the figure of Iker, which is responsible of most of the good humour moments of the film. Because we think humour humanizes relationships so it plays an important role in the film.

The characters surrounding the principal trio are designed to provide lights and shadows on the main story. However, each has its own hint and its own way of seeing life, all of them able to awaken interest beyond their utilitarianism of their role in the plot.

PRODUCTION COMPANY

Karambola Productions began its activity in 2009 as a company specialized in audiovisual products, film and television.

That year worked for the City Council of Bilbao the documentary “BILBAO, UNA CIUDAD PARA EL CINE”, a guide of locations for film productions that showed the possibilities of the city as a movie set. It was used as a tool to promote the Bilbao Film Commission at international festivals. Also in 2009, held the photo exhibition “Bilbao-USA. Km O ”

In 2010 made five documentaries. One of them, “ARQUITECTURA Y REVOLUCIÓN: EL RACIONALISMO VASCO”, commissioned by ETB, and the remaining four for the City Council of Bilbao, entitled “BILBAO EN EL TIEMPO”. “ARQUITECTURA Y REVOLUCIÓN: EL RACIONALISMO VASCO” which dealt with the origin and development of rationalist architecture in the Basque Country. The four documentaries “BILBAO EN EL TIEMPO” narrated from a personal and poetic perspective the spectacular transformation of a city that exceeded the industrial crisis betting on a change of urban and economic model, in which culture and art played a fundamental role.

In 2011 the production company co-produced, along with ETB, “ANFITRIOI BEREZIA” and “EL EXTRAÑO ANFITRIÓN” two TV movies starring some archaeology students that travel during a summer to a town in the Basque coast and became involved in a conspiracy of psychological terror. Both films participated in the International Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao, Zinebi 2011, and the Basque Film Festival of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Zinemastea 2012.

In 2013 Karambola Productions has co-produced, also with ETB, and Euskaltel support and participation of the Department of Education, Language Policy and Culture of the Basque Government, the film “ALABA ZINTZOA”.

“ALABA ZINTZOA” tells the story of Susana, a young woman that works as a maid. One day she settles in her mistress domicile while she has to go to a business trip. The young woman just wants to run away from her own problems and enjoy the treats and the pleasures that brighten the lives of rich. But what stars as an innocent prank, later gets complicated with dramatic consequences.

In 2014 KARAMBOLA PRODUCTIONS filmed also in collaboration with ETB, another film: “TXARRIBODA”. The film, a tense and haunting thriller, tells the story of Fran, a young businessman that when he sees his fortune in risk due to his marital problems, decide to draw a complex plan to get rid of his wife.
